Throughout my experience as a yoga instructor, the most common complaint that I hear from students is that they experience wrist pain during practice. Some students are experiencing pain due to wrist injury, osteoarthritis, and/or carpal tunnel syndrome, while others may be new to yoga and need to build the wrist strength necessary for yoga’s weight-bearing poses. Whatever the cause, yoga can be very therapeutic—as long as the poses are executed with proper alignment.

Many yoga students have injuries and physical ailments.

Some are drawn to yoga as a form of therapy for their physical suffering, while others attend yoga despite their injuries, aches and pains. When I consider the curative effects of yoga, I’m reminded of Bikram Choudhury, world renowned master yogi, who at the age of 13, won the National India Yoga Championship and maintained the title for the three years following. Savasana. Some of us view our final resting pose as the much-needed reward at the end of a challenging practice, while others cringe at the thought of sitting still for five minutes. As westerners, we are taught from a very early age that time is valuable, idleness is evil, there is no time for relaxing, there are things to be done, go, go, go! Many even feel a sense of guilt in taking personal time to rejuvenate—even for a few minutes!
